Lyophilized vs. reconstituted stability
Lyophilized (freeze-dried) peptide material is generally far more stable than material that has already been reconstituted into solution. In its lyophilized form, it should be kept cold and protected from light and humidity. Once reconstituted, the stability window shrinks significantly — often from months to days or weeks, depending on the compound.
Conditions that matter most
Three variables have an outsized effect on stability: temperature, light exposure, and the solvent used for reconstitution. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles are another common source of degradation that is easy to overlook in a busy lab. Keeping a simple log of storage conditions and reconstitution dates helps catch anomalies before they affect results.
Handling practices that protect data integrity
This is not about following an arbitrary rule — it is about protecting the integrity of your research data. A sample that has silently degraded can still “work” in an experiment while producing misleading results. Documenting storage and handling conditions alongside your data is part of good research practice, not an afterthought.
