A Certificate of Analysis (COA) is the document that turns a purity claim into something verifiable. But to most readers it looks like a wall of numbers. Here is what actually matters, and how to read it like a researcher rather than a consumer.

The four numbers that actually matter

Most COAs report a lot more information than a researcher needs on a first pass. Focus on four things: the HPLC purity percentage, the testing method used to obtain it, the lot number, and the testing date. Everything else is supporting detail.

The purity percentage tells you how clean the sample is relative to everything else detected in the run. The method matters because HPLC results from different labs, using different columns or gradients, are not always directly comparable without knowing the testing conditions.

Why the lot number is the most important field on the page

A COA is only valid for the specific batch it references. Purity can vary slightly between production runs, even for the same product from the same manufacturer. A certificate for one lot does not guarantee the same result for a different lot — always match the lot number on the certificate to the lot number on the product you actually have in front of you.

Red flags worth knowing

Be cautious of certificates with no lot number, no testing date, or a testing method that is not disclosed. A generic or reused-looking COA that does not clearly tie back to the specific product in hand is not meaningful documentation, regardless of how professional it looks.
